Tapeats
Mile 134 to Kanab Creek 143.5
July 17, 2001
We
headed to Christmas Tree Cave (Mile 135.5) and passed Helicopter Eddy and
the narrowest point in the river at Mile 135.
There were plenty of bat droppings on the cave floor. We got used to the bats at night, and wondered what they ate because there did not seem to be many insects.

Filtering water at Deer Creek |
We reached Deer Creek Falls (Mile 136) and some hiked to the Anasazi hand prints, while others pumped and filtered water from the creek. We learned that water was a group effort. Even though we brought cases of bottled water, we needed to drink at least a half gallon each per day. |
We reached Kanab Creek
(Mile 143.5) to find the upper camp already taken, so we ended up, after
much debate, on the lower side of the creek and prayed that it would not
flash. Itchy and Scratchy made a labor intensive vegetable lasagna for
supper, and Itchy decided that food on his trip would consist of "open
it, drink it, spread it or squeeze it". The lasagna was good though,
and Bill and Elf saw the second Rattlesnake of the trip slithering along
the path.
