Rowing to civilization, Kaibab Bridge, Mile 87.5

Cindy calls home from Phantom Ranch. We had ice cold lemonade and mailed our postcards to be sent out with the mules. Using a flush toilet was a treat.

And then we are off again for our next camp.

We had planned to camp at Granite Rapid, but a commercial outfitter saw us pulling out from the Phantom Ranch beach. He did a quick turn and rather than let his customers enjoy time at the ranch, they motored downstream to get the campsite - first come, first served. The guide then set up the group porta potty at a site near the river with beautiful views - which is normal. But, I still feel bad for the lady who went running, pulling her pants up, when we came around the bend in the river. I think I would have just sat there, smiling and waving. Privacy was not an issue by the time we got through the first week.

The Gray Ghost nearly flipped in Granite Rapid, Mile 93.5 and it made for good conversation when we reached Hermit Camp at Mile 95.

Next Day July 14
